Almost everything I have learned about sewing, I learned from my Mom. My Mom was a constant sewist, creating everything from napkins, clothes, curtains and of course, quilts. I was 8 years old when I received my first sewing lesson. She would allow me to sew simple things at first, like hemming a tablecloth. There were times when she would place a small bundle of squares that I could sew together to make a block. Some of the rules I learned then are still true today. Lock your stitches and keep your seams straight because it keeps your project straight and keeps your seams from falling apart.
