Learning to sew will give you the sewing skills that you will need to create a quilt. First steps first.
-Supplies essential are thread, fabric and a sewing machine. The sewing machine is a class by itself. There are some knobs, buttons and guides that you will learn to use that make sewing a breeze. I will also teach you the most common troubleshooting problems that might occur with the sewing machine.
My Basic Sewing Class will prepare you to handle the sewing aspect of your quilt. I will teach you how all those bells and whistles work on the sewing machine. Straight out of this preparatory class you will be progressing to straight line sewing. We will practice straight line sewing then work with a simple project and learn about seams, piecing and cutting fabric.
-Fabric preparation, pattern selection and cutting your fabric is the next step. This step is always fun. You will actually see the beginning of your project come to life. I will teach you how to use a rotary cutter, rulers and patterns. After cutting all your pieces, you will begin sewing the pieces together to create blocks for your quilt.
-Sewing the blocks together to make the quilt top is next. There is so much sewing going on and you might feel you are building a never-ending project. The key here is patience and a more than ‘I’m hanging in there by a thread spirit!’ I recommend that the first project should be a small quilt and that will save you some tears.
_Once all your blocks are sewn together, you will finally see your quilt top in all its beauty. The next step is ironing your quilt top. You will preview all your seams and stitches. Any repairs or corrections will be applied at this time. Finally, after all these step are completed, your quilt is ready for quilting and that is a whole other class and world!
