Piece of Cake

Although I enjoy the process of making a quilt, there are times that have been a challenge in cutting and piecing the project. The bigger projects require more time, energy and patience to complete. So, I have been actively looking for simpler patterns and ideas that will not strain the brain or break the spirit of creativity. Recently, I found a great pattern that can be used to build a quilt using different fabrics and colors with a little effort and some quilting ingenuity.

The Layer Cake is a package of 42 precut 10 inch squares of different patterned fabrics and colors. The Layer Cakes I have previewed are fabrics and colors that work well together with some complement and contrast colors combined. The pattern is cut to create two different sized rectangles. The small rectangle is a 3 inch by 10 inch rectangle and the larger piece is 7 inch by 10 inch. After cutting all your squares you can mix and match your pieces to create a 10 inch square. I like to pin my arranged pieces to the design board to preview the quilt before I sew. Also, if you have a plentiful stash of fabric, you can easily cut your own 10 inch squares and create a fabulous quilt. I have included the fabric names I used for the pattern and the yardage using 44-45 fabric width. So, maybe you can have your own “piece of cake” too!
