I have been sewing and quilting for decades. The one memory that stands apart is of my Mom and her sewing machines. I remember that she used her Mom’s vintage Singer treadle sewing machine. I still recall the treadle clacking as she sewed. She was a true sewist, pattern designer and sustainable resourcer of whatever materials were available. She designed shirts for my older brothers. She made aprons from flour sack fabrics. As a child, I must have worn some flour sack fabric dresses. Sometime in 1957, my older brother gifted my Mom a brand new electric Brother Select sewing machine. To say that she was overjoyed about her new sewing machine is an understatement! After she learned all the in and outs of her new Brother Select, there was no stopping her creative streak! Her projects were finished in less time than her old treadle which opened the door for more sewing each day. So our house was full of her sewing projects, curtains, pillowcases, linens and napkins galore. My Mom loved that she was able to gift so many of her crafty creations. I loved that she taught me so much of what she knew. Thanks Mom, you make my day everyday!
